Yiu Man "Roman" Cheung, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully at his home in Waltham, Massachusetts, in September 2025 after a courageous fifteen month battle with pancreatic cancer.
Born in Foshan, China, and raised in Hong Kong, Roman faced early hardships, but the unwavering support of his brother and three sisters became a lifelong source of strength. He persevered, working as an apprentice mechanic while still in school and graduating from Morrison Hill Technical Institute. Roman’s technical aptitude stood out, and his work at Dah Chong Hong Motor Service Centre earned him rare opportunities for advanced training in Japan with both Nissan and Honda. Amid this professional success, Roman found his greatest joy after meeting and marrying his cherished wife, Clara. They would go on to share forty-five beautiful years of marriage.
With a daughter already in their family, Roman and Clara made the brave decision to start their lives over, immigrating from Hong Kong to Boston in 1988. After settling into their new home, Roman's professional drive led him to establish his own auto repair garage. Their family expanded once more with the birth of their son. Roman and Clara lovingly guided their children, who both went on to graduate from Brookline High School and Boston-area universities.
For 21 years Roman ran his garage on Lexington Street in Waltham. He was known for his pride in doing good work and his ability to build lasting relationships with customers, many of whom became dear friends. Even after retiring, he continued to help and advised friends and family with their automobiles. In recent years, he cherished frequent outings and visits with his beloved grandson and granddaughter.
Roman will be remembered for his dedication, humor, graciousness, and ingenuity. He was the kind of person who always had a tool or a gadget on hand, a perfect representation of his perpetual thoughtfulness and his ability to fix and improve things, big and small. Roman will be dearly missed, but his spirit and wisdom will forever be an inspiration to everyone who knew him.
Family friends will honor and remember Roman’s life by gathering in the Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main St., Waltham, on Saturday, September 27th, where his funeral service will be held at 3 PM. Burial will be held privately at a later date.
