Wiunie Tutiven

February 9, 1935 — March 29, 2023

Waltham

Wiunie Tutiven, of Waltham, formally of Ecuador, passed away on Wednesday, March 29, 2023 at The Armenian Nursing & Rehabilition Center in Jamaica Plain. He was 88.

He was born in Guayaquil, Ecuador on February 9, 1935 a son of Pedro and Mercedes (Castro) Tutiven. Raised and educated in Ecuador, after finishing his formal schooling, Wiunie attended an electrical mechanics trade school which prepared him for his career in that field of work.

Wiunie married Juana Maria in Guayaquil and the two settled down to start their family and were married for over 60 years. He first immigrated to the United States in the 70’s however he kept a residence in Ecuador, where he lived in the winter, so that his children could finish their Catholic education there. Each of the children immigrated once they graduated and reached adulthood. In 1986, once all his children had graduated, Wiunie and Juana moved to The United States full-time, making Waltham their home. In Waltham, he worked for many years, until his retirement, at The Fernald School in the maintenance and engineering department.

Wiunie grew up playing soccer and it remained a lifelong passion. He never missed a chance to watch his hometown team Barcelona S.C. He also loved to spend time with family, especially if it was a family event that included dressing up and dancing, which he did until he was 80 years old. He was always the first on the floor and last to sit, and as an impeccable dresser, he was certainly something to see on the dance floor.

In addition to his wife Juana, he leaves his children, Melvin & Letty, Linda & Darwin, Fidel & Melissa, Bella & Brian,
Karina & Rodrigo, and Jimmy; his grandchildren, Wuinie Antonio, Jennifer, Michael, Stephanie, Raul, Ariel, Bianca, Alexandra, and Valentina; his greatgrandchildren Evelyn and Vitoria; his siblings, Gerry, William,
Marlene, Freddy, Peter, Miguel, Venus, Fatima, Miriam, Eduardo, Pedro, Galo and Elizabeth.

He was also the brother of the late Walter, Wesner, Pedro, Maritza, Francisco, Rocio, Monica and Gino.

Family and friends will honor and remember Wiunie’s life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham, on Monday, April 3rd from 4 to 7 p.m. and again at 8 a.m. on Tuesday morning before leaving in procession to Saint Mary’s Church, 133 School Street, Waltham, where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m.
