Mrs. Virginia (Menidis) Politis, of Waltham, died Monday, June 26, 2023 in Newton-Wellesley Hospital after an illness. She was 85.

Virginia was born May 25, 1938 in Kastorion, Sparta, Greece a daughter of the late Plato and Nikolata (Balioti) Menidis. Raised and educated in Greece she immigrated to the United States in 1960 settling in Woburn. She received her United States Citizenship in 1965 and traveled back to Greece where she met her late husband, George Politis. They were married on February 13, 1966 in Sparta, Greece and they later moved back to Waltham.

Virginia was talented with the ability to cook and bake and as a result made it her life’s work for over thirty-five years at Brandeis University. During that time she would prepare meals for many executives, faculty, and dignitaries. She retired in 2006.

Her love for family and friends was evident in the countless meals she would prepare for them. Known to her grandchildren as ‘Yia-Yia’ she enjoyed following them in their schooling, dance and sporting events.

She made annual trips home to her native Greece where she cherished time with her family. Along with her sons, Chris and Peter they enjoyed time experiencing Greek restaurants and festivals…staying true to her ethnicity.

In addition to her husband, George, she is predeceased by her sister, the late Joan Salamanis (late William) and the late George Menidis.

She leaves her children, Chris Politis and his wife, Tracy, and Peter Politis and his wife, Adrienne, all of Waltham; her grandchildren, Ryan, Alex, Amanda, Troy, and Victoria Politis; her siblings, Dina Kastixte (late Peter) of Ionnin, Greece, Flora Papanicolaou (late Orestis) of Salonika, Greece, Julia Kresser (Chuck) of Kingston, New York, Niko Menidis (late Maro) of Cyprus, Greece; many nieces & nephews.

Family and friends will honor and remember Virginia's life by gathering for visitation at The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Saturday, July 1st from 9:30 to 11 a.m. before leaving in procession to Taxiarchae Archangels Greek Orthodox Church, 25 Bigelow Avenue, Watertown at where her service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Burial will follow in Mount Feake Cemetery, Waltham.
