Steven N. Velis

June 22, 1971 — May 12, 2025

Waltham, MA

Waltham – It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Steven N. Velis, who peacefully passed away on Monday, May 12, 2025, at Newton-Wellesley Hospital after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He was surrounded by love, with his mother and sisters by his side. He was 53 years old.

Born on June 22, 1971, in Boston, Steven was the beloved son of Maria L. (Rodriguez) Velis and the late Florencio F. Velis, Cuban immigrants who instilled in him the values of hard work, resilience, and deep family devotion. Raised and educated in Waltham, he was graduate of Waltham Vocational High School.

Steven embraced life fully. He spent a decade on the West Coast enjoying the vibrant lifestyle of San Diego before returning to Waltham in 2013 to be closer to his family. He was employed as a Home Energy Auditor with Revise Inc., based in Haverhill.

An avid outdoorsman, Steven loved boating, fishing, hiking, and especially riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle. He was passionate about staying active and could often be found at Orangetheory Fitness classes. A true New England sports enthusiast, he never missed a chance to cheer on his favorite teams.

Steven had a heart full of love, especially for his family. A devoted son, he cared for his mother —cooking for her, helping around the house, and being her steadfast support. He was the planner behind cherished family vacations and the host of every holiday gathering, creating memories that will be forever treasured.

He also shared a special bond with his beloved border collie, Bella, who brought him immense joy, companionship, and comfort.

Steven was predeceased by his father, Florencio, and his brother, Alain. He is survived by his loving mother, Maria L. Velis; his sisters, Gloria A. Mills (Marvin) of Waltham and Maria I. Hall (Michael) of Shrewsbury; and his cherished nieces and nephews, Angel, Jake, C.J., Chris, Lilly, and Viviana. He also leaves behind his loving girlfriend, Judy Johnston Dolan of Kingston, as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends.

Steven’s warmth, humor, and generous spirit touched the lives of all who knew him. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Family and friends will honor and remember Steven’s life by gathering for an Evening Wake in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Monday, May 19th from 4 to 7 p.m. and again on Tuesday morning when his Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Mount Feake Cemetery, Waltham.
