Steven L. Stamas

November 25, 1950 — June 13, 2021

Mr. Steven L. Stamas, of Lexington, died on June 13, 2021 in Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston. He was 70 years old.

Steven was born in Boston on November 25, 1950, the son of the late Louis and Dora (DiGiacomo) Stamas. He was raised and educated in Stoneham, MA.

After graduating from Stoneham High School he earned his Bachelor's Degree from UMass Amherst and later his Master of Fine Arts from Syracuse University in New York. Steven was a gifted and generous artist and art teacher, who spent much of his youth traveling the world to train in the art, dance, and rituals of other cultures. His experience traveling allowed him to return home as a talented and multi-dimensional maker; he was skilled in printmaking, etching, and painting among many other self-taught talents. With the formation of Steve Stamas Designs, Steve merged his passion for the arts and his love for people into a career in jewelry making. He had many cherished friends in the trade and enjoyed traveling throughout the country to participate in trade shows. One of the most generous men you were ever likely to meet, Steve left behind countless beautiful pieces of his jewelry as gifts over the years—with friends, family, and even passing acquaintances across the globe. In this and so many other ways, Steve and the beauty he shared throughout his life are still with us.

In 1986 he met Yuru Yan at the restaurant where she worked in Chinatown. After a brief courtship, the couple were married on August 13, 1987 in New York City. They lived for a short time in New York and Rhode Island before moving to Milford, New Hampshire where they would begin their family together. A few years after the birth of their sons, Ben and Sam, they settled in Lexington where they have lived since. Some of their happiest memories together as a family came from trips throughout the U.S. to visit national parks, to ski, and—Steve made sure—to eat delicious food. His family remembers him for his kindness, his gentleness, his raucous sense of humor and his love for adventure and whimsy.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Yuru (Yan) Stamas; his sons, Benjamin Stamas of Cambridge and Samuel Stamas of Los Angeles, California; his brother, Louis 'Jack' Stamas Jr. and his wife, Sharon, of Stratham and by his nephews and niece, Christopher Stamas, Glenn Stamas and Yvonne Woo.
