Steven D. Dunton, of Marlborough, died Tuesday, June 2, 2026 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He was 75.
Steve was born in Cambridge on May 25, 1951, a son of the late Francis and Nellie (Paone) Dunton. Raised in Watertown, he graduated from Watertown High School and went to work private security for seven years for the Seiler Corporation in Waltham. He was a longtime resident of Marlborough
Following in his father's footsteps, and fulfilling a lifelong dream, he became a police officer after graduating from the Massachusetts State Police Academy. He was appointed an officer with the Waltham Police Department on February 14, 1982 and proudly served until his retirement on July 12, 2008.
Steve always looked forward to relaxing trips in the Bahamas and Old Silver Beach in Falmouth. In his spare time at home he enjoyed fishing and maintaining his yard and garden.
In addition to his parents, Steve was predeceased by his brother, Richard Dunton, and his brother-in-law, Michael Melanson.
He leaves his sisters, Kathleen Dunton of Watertown, Shirley Dunton of Marlborough, Gail Melanson of Hudson, and Sharon Higgins (Brad) of Marlborough; his sister-in-law, Patricia Dunton of Waltham; his former wife, Rita (Gentile) Dunton and many nieces, nephews, and their families.
Family and friends will honor and remember Steve's life by gathering for an Afternoon Wake in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham, on Sunday, June 7th from 3 to 6 p.m. and again at 9 a.m. on Monday morning before leaving in procession to Saint Patrick's Church, 212 Main Street, Watertown where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Saint Patrick's Cemetery, Watertown.
