Stephen E. Swensen

Mr. Stephen E. Swensen, of Somerville, died Saturday, September 24, 2022 in Massachusetts General Hospital. He was 73.

Stephen was born on August 5, 1949 in Waltham a son of the late Robert L. and Abigail (Brayne) Swensen. A 1967 graduate of Saint Mary's High School he then earned his Bachelor's degree from Saint Anselm's College in Manchester, New Hampshire in 1971.

Mr. Swensen taught for over forty years. He spent twenty years teaching English at the middle school level at St. John's in Cambridge and later St. Joseph's in Somerville. He then taught over twenty years at Somerville High School before retirement.

Stephen fought a hard battle against cancer and in reflection he said, 'I leave this world knowing I was blessed with the life I got to share with my family and friends…I had a very good life!'

He will be remembered for his talent with writing, his pride in being a teacher, his terrific sense of humor, and his ability to always make friends wherever he roamed. He was an avid fan and loyal to all the New England sports teams.

Stephen leaves his siblings, Robert T. Swensen (Melanie) of Niantic, Connecticut, Gail Marie O'Donnell (Kevin) of Waltham, Mary Lee Ridings (Walter) of Townsend, Brian D. Swensen (Sandra) of Ashby and the late Margaret Mary Thonis (Thomas) and Kathleen Spinney (late George). Stephen is also survived by fourteen nephews and nieces and eighteen grand-nephews & nieces whom he would always say 'he loved to pieces!' He will also be lovingly remembered by his many cousins and longtime friends of over sixty years.

Family and friends will honor and remember Stephen's life by gathering on Friday, October 14th in Saint Mary's Church, 133 School Street, Waltham where his funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Fr. Paul E. Kilroy will officiate. Burial will be private in Hillside Cemetery, Townsend. There are no calling hours.
