Sean McBride Ragon

Sean Ragon, a pioneering and charismatic musician and entrepreneur, died August 31, 2026, in Berlin, Germany, at the young age of 45 from an infection.

Sean was born March 20, 1981, the son of Phillip T. Ragon (Terry) and Sharon K. McBride along with his stepmother Susan M. Ragon. He grew up in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and attended high school at Cambridge Rindge and Latin - winning an award for his exceptional ability in mathematics and studying math at Harvard Extension. Sean graduated from New York University with a Bachelor of Music in Music Technology degree. Shortly thereafter he settled in Brooklyn where he met and married Beverly Hames with whom he welcomed a daughter, Cecilia Pearl Ragon, and son, Adrian Donovan Ragon.

Sean’s interest in music was evident in his youth - recording his first two albums while in high school and playing in local punk bands like Class Action and Wreckage. Sean played seven instruments and designed and built custom synthesizers - including one in a bento box. He personally built several recording studios by hand, often worked as a DJ both in the U.S. and internationally, and started the record label Blind Prophet Records. In 2009 he opened the Brooklyn record store Heaven Street Records that focused on his love of vintage and often esoteric vinyl records.

Sean’s signature group Cult of Youth began as a solo bedroom project, with Sean recording and performing every instrument on his self-released 2008 debut album “A Stick to Bind, A Seed to Grow”. Cult of Youth grew into a full band with a global following, and Sean signed with the music label Sacred Bones. They released a trio of albums - “Cult of Youth”, “Love Will Prevail”, and “Final Days”. In 2022, he released the final Cult of Youth album “With Open Arms” through Hospital Productions.

The band’s unique blend of acoustic instrumentation, driving rhythms and Ragon’s deep vocals found a dedicated following in the neofolk, post-punk, experimental, and industrial music genres. The band’s sound evolved significantly over the years, taking on a decidedly psychedelic tone in the later releases. Driven by Sean’s impassioned lyrics, the band explored a search for meaning and beauty in an often-cruel world, touching on themes of spirituality, a rejection of greed, the necessity of hope, and the salvation of love.

Sean was an incredibly prolific artist. In addition to touring internationally with Cult of Youth – including Eastern Europe, Russia, and Japan - Sean toured and collaborated with several other groups, including childhood hero Genesis P-Orridge and Psychic TV. He also engaged with numerous solo projects. Sean loved sound and often utilized unconventional materials to translate the noise of everyday life into music.

In 2023 Sean moved to Berlin, Germany to live in a community he loved, where he also acquired a small local restaurant and transformed it into a destination and cultural hub. In 2025 he and Beverly divorced, but he remained deeply connected to his family and especially his children whom he loved.

Sean had enormous charism. He was a sweet child who was kind to others, and he carried his passion, charisma, and love for others throughout his life. Beloved by all, he is being mourned around the world by all who knew him.

Sean leaves his children Cecilia Pearl and Adrian Donovan Ragon; his parents Phillip Ragon (Terry) and Sharon McBride; his stepmother Susan Ragon; his former wife Beverly Ragon; his brother Evan McBride Ragon and his wife Mariel Monteleone-Ragon and their daughter Liliana; his stepbrother Andrew A. Pevarnek, Jr. and his wife Michelle and their children Gavin, Sophia, Chloe, Nolan and Mason; and his aunts and uncles Linda McBride, Jim McBride, Steve Ragon, Helen Brady, Henry Hoey, and Mary Ledin .

Family and friends will honor and remember Sean’s life by gathering for an Afternoon Wake in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Sunday, September 13 from 2 to 6 p.m.

His funeral service and burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Sean’s name may be made to any charity of choice.
