Mr. Robert F. Murphy, Jr., of Waltham, died Friday, August 25, 2023 in the Miriam Boyd Parlin Hospice Residence in Wayland. He was 82.

Bob was born in Newton on April 29, 1941, a son of the late Robert F., Sr. and Lillian Y. (Marotte) Murphy. Raised in Waltham, he was a graduate of Waltham High School and enlisted in the United States Air Force following his graduation. Upon his discharge he married the love of his life, Ann Rivers in Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Church on Trapelo Road.

Bob went back to school earning his associates degree from Lowell Tech-Mass Bay Community College and worked for more than forty-one years as a project technician at M.I.T. Lincoln Laboratory.

Nothing brought Bob more joy than spending time with his beloved wife, Ann. The pair loved visiting national parks by train, especially Zion and Bryce Canyon. He was a model train enthusiast, maintaining an impressive collection of authentic trains and model Navy ships. He also loved photography.

In addition to his beloved wife, Ann L. (Rivers) Murphy, he is reunited in heaven with his sisters, the late Judith Murphy and Joan MacDonald.

Bob leaves his sons, Michael S. Murphy (Karen) of Sudbury, and Robert J. Murphy (Tara) of Westwood; his grandchildren, Sean, Cashman, Connor, Colleen, and Kate Murphy; his brothers and sisters, Janet McCarter of Waltham, Joyce Howes of Charlotte, North Carolina, Alfred Murphy of Mexico, and Ralph “Ted” Murphy of Leominster; and many nieces, nephews, and their families.

Family and friends will honor and remember Bob's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Tuesday, August 29th from 4 to 7 p.m. and again Wednesday morning at 8 a.m. before leaving in procession to Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Church, 880 Trapelo Road, Waltham, where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Burial will follow in Mount Feake Cemetery, Waltham.
