February 17, 1927 — September 25, 2021

Watertown – Mrs. Phyllis A. (Collins) McCarthy, of Watertown, died peacefully on September 25, 2021 in Care Dimensions Hospice, Lincoln. She was 94.

Phyllis was born in Waltham on February 17, 1927, the daughter of the late John and Alice (Murdock) Collins. She graduated from Waltham High School in 1944 and later married Thomas F. McCarthy, Sr. at Saint Mary's Church on December 19, 1946. The pair began their family in Waltham before a move to Watertown in 1961 where she has been a resident since. She worked hard to take care of her family and for many years was the bookkeeper for her husband and son's business, Midtown Trucking Company. Always one to stay busy, when her children grew older she worked as a lunch aide at the Cuniff School in Watertown and at Watertown Savings Bank as a teller. She and her husband loved to be close to the ocean and many happy memories were made at their cabin in Wareham. Her life revolved around her family and she cherished spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren as her family grew.

She was the beloved wife of the late Thomas F. McCarthy, Sr. and is survived by her children, Sheila M. Hopkins of Truro, Kevin J. McCarthy (Mary Jean Brown) of Hamden, Connecticut, Susan M. Ingraham of Portland, Maine, Marilyn J. Salvas (James) of Watertown and Shevaun E. Baker (Tim) of Fitchburg; her grandchildren, Joseph Gorman, Donna Gorman, Jessica Gebhardt, Mark Hopkins, Brian Hopkins, Thomas McCarthy, Roseanne True, Justine Zimbardi, Jenny Horton, Ashley Doyle, Ted Ingraham, Andrew Salvas, Jackie Salvas, Amanda Vreelend and Jennifer Cormier and is also survived by 23 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and their families.

She was also the mother of the late Thomas F. McCarthy, Jr. and Phyllis A. 'Pam' Gorman and sister of the late John Collins, Richard Collins, William Collins, Catherine 'Kay' Judge, Mary Patterson and Olive Melanson.
