Peter E. Monahan, of Waltham, died Friday, October 30, 2026 at the Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial VA Hospital in Bedford. He was 82.
Born in New York City on July 12, 1944, Peter was the son of the late Edmond and Frances Monahan. He was raised in Englewood, New Jersey, and was a graduate of Dwight Morrow High School.
Peter proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War as a Radarman Third Class aboard the destroyer USS Mitscher and the aircraft carrier USS Ticonderoga.
In 1970, Peter married the love of his life, Waltham native Cheryl Duprez, at St. Mary's Church in Waltham, where they made their home and raised their son, Matthew.
A skilled cabinet maker, Peter worked in union shops for many years, the last being Friedman-Carter in Waltham. He also worked part-time at BayBank. Always eager to learn, he attended Wentworth Institute at night, earning a teaching certificate in vocational woodworking, and later returned to Wentworth to study architectural drafting. He was also a rifle instructor.
Peter enjoyed bowling in his younger years, fishing, biking into Boston, and golfing with his group in retirement. Above all, he was a true family man who treasured time with his son and granddaughters, and he loved his dog, Lola.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Cheryl M. (Duprez) Monahan; his son, Matthew Monahan (Leah) of Woburn; his cherished granddaughters, Julia and Gianna; his brother, Michael Monahan (Jane) of Santa Rosa, California; his sisters, Kathleen Mercer of Idaho and Mary Padella of Concord, California; as well as many nieces and nephews.
