Boston – Patricia Anne (Whitman) Atwood passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, at Sherrill House in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts. She was 92 years of age.
Born on April 12, 1933, in Hanover, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of the late Alfred M. Whitman and Margaret (Bowness) Whitman. She was raised in Weymouth and graduated from Weymouth High School with the Class of 1951, where she was honored as “Best Dressed.” She subsequently enrolled in the nursing program at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital School, where she met her future husband, Alden Atwood. They were married in December 1954 at Trinity Church in Melrose.
Pat resided for many years in Melrose, Lynn, Dorchester, Townsend, and North Quincy Mass. before spending her later years in Boston.
She devoted 35 years of professional service to Massachusetts General Hospital as a medical record coder. She took great pride in her work and embraced the meticulous and exacting challenges of coding medical records by hand during an era before digital systems.
She cherished her annual summer journeys by train to Prince Edward Island, her mother’s birthplace, where she spent treasured time on her grandfather’s family farm. She also found joy in gardening and in the loyal companionship of her beloved dog, Monty.
Above all, Pat was devoted to her family. She was a steadfast and dedicated mother who raised her four children with unwavering love, creativity, and commitment.
She is survived by her children: Rosanne Atwood Foley and her husband, James, of Grafton, Massachusetts; Christopher A. Atwood and Jeff Kubiatowicz of Boston, Massachusetts; Peter R. Atwood and his wife, Martha, of Fort Madison, Iowa; and Andrew G. Atwood of Rindge, New Hampshire and his partner, Suzanne. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Amelia Foley; Michael, Irina, Viktoria, Daniel, and Nic Atwood; Justyn, Jameson, Jonathan, and Joshua Atwood; and Vincent Albini; her great-grandson, Gavin Mann; her sister, Pauline Paton of Plymouth, Massachusetts; as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her brother, Peter Whitman.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend her Funeral Service, officiated by the Rev. Morgan Allen, on Saturday, March 21, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Trinity Church, 206 Clarendon Street, Copley Square, Boston. A reception will follow at the church.
