Michael Patrick Tierney, 76, of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, passed away suddenly and peacefully on December 29, 2023. He was born on March 20, 1947, to Bernard J. Tierney and Mary E. (O’Malley) Tierney of Waltham, Massachusetts. Michael enjoyed a remarkable life filled with a wonderful loving family, sacrificial military service, travel, and his passion for helping others in recovery (42 years).

A graduate of Waltham High School and Biscayne College, Mr. Tierney proudly served his country for 23 years as a member of the US Army, joining in 1974. Throughout his distinguished military career, he had the privilege of serving in various capacities and traveled to many countries around the world. Mike's dedication and commitment to the US Army was evident. Retiring in 1997 as Chief Warrant Officer 3 as a well-respected, accomplished leader in Anchorage, AK. After his military career, Michael stayed in Alaska providing the State with his inspection expertise and talents.

Michael was preceded in death by Bernard J Tierney (father), Mary E Tierney (mother), Sean J Tierney, Bernard Joseph Tierney Jr. (brothers) and Patricia A. Howarth (sister). He is survived by his devoted wife, Irene Melrose Tierney, with whom he shared 50 years of marriage. Together, they built a loving and supportive home, creating a strong foundation for their family.

Mike's legacy lives on through his three children: Joanna Cusack and her husband, Edward Cusack, Fiona Tierney, Allison Kuchinad and her husband, Vilas Kuchinad; his sisters, Mary Ellen Hambright, Elizabeth A. Fitzgerald, and Kathleen M. Tierney; his brothers, Francis 'Toby' Tierney and his wife, Denise Casey Tierney, Daniel Tierney and his wife, Phoung Nga Tierney, and Kevin Andrew Tierney. In addition, Mike leaves over thirty nieces and nephews.

As a doting grandfather, Mike adored his six grandchildren: Gavin Cusack, Andrew Cusack, Fiona Cusack, Patrick Cusack. Rosie Kuchinad, Jack Kuchinad, and Grayson Tierney. He took great joy in their accomplishments, sharing in their triumphs and supporting them unconditionally.

Mike was a source of inspiration and guidance to his children and grandchildren, imparting valuable life lessons and leaving behind many cherished memories.
 
Family and friends will honor and remember Michael’s life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham Thursday, January 11th from 4 to 7 p.m. and again at 9 a.m. on Friday morning before leaving in procession to Saint Mary's Church 133 School Street, Waltham where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne at 1:30 p.m.
