Mattie J. Jones

November 19, 1944 — May 11, 2023

Shrewsbury, MA

Shrewsbury – Mrs. Mattie J. (Jackson) Jones died unexpectedly on Thursday, May 11, 2023. She was 78.

Mattie Eve Jackson was born November 19, 1944 in Richland, Georgia a daughter of the late Jimmy Jackson and Eula (Bell) Lee. A graduate of Buena Vista High School she was a standout star on its girls’ basketball team.  She met Ivory S. Jones through an introduction by her cousin and they later married on August 16, 1969 in the Charles Street Baptist Church in Boston’s Roxbury neighborhood and in 1983 they made Shrewsbury their home.

Mattie worked as an administrative assistant for many years in the personnel department at UMASS – Memorial Healthcare | University Campus before retiring.

While an adopted daughter of New England…she never lost her genuine and endearing southern charm and most notably…her accent. And with that as well came many of her signature recipes which she shared with family. She was a great cook and as we know food is love made visible…and Mattie shared her love! And she will also be remembered for her fantastic sense of humor.

Her genuine interest and love for sports easily afforded her to talk about them. She knew as well, if not better that then commentators, the stats and scores of most players and teams throughout both the N.B.A and the N.F.L. It’s also no secret she loved the roll of the dice and she and Ivory took many excursions to both nearby and distant casinos. Shopping was a favorite pastime as well.

Perhaps something of the past for many…but Mattie always took the time to make certain to send family and friends the perfectly sought out card that was appropriate for the occasion with a handwritten note. Mattie cherished the role of being ‘Nana’ to her four grandchildren. And retirement for both Mattie and Ivory afforded more time to do a lot of what is remembered in her obituary as well as spend the past twenty winters in Lake Nona, Florida to enjoy the climate and friendships of family and friends.

In addition to her husband of 53 years, Ivory, she leaves her children, Maurice Washington and his wife, Margeaux, of Los Angeles, California, Daryl I. Jones and his wife, Nancy, of Shrewsbury and Stacey J. Mulligan and her husband, Craig of Norwell; her grandchildren, Noah, Maia, Braeden and Daryl ‘D.J.’; sister of Joe Jackson, Carrie Baker, James Jackson, Clarence Jackson, MacArthur Jackson, Ruth Milner, Curtis Jackson, Marie Harris, Walter Jackson, Frances Tymes; also survived by many nieces & nephews.

Funeral services for Mattie and burial in Mountain View Cemetery in Shrewsbury will be held privately.

Expressions of sympathy in Mattie’s memory may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Arrangements by James & John Heald of The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street, Waltham.
