Mary L. (Doherty) Sullivan

August 3, 1934 — July 6, 2023

Bedford, NH

Mary L.(Doherty) Sullivan, of Bedford, New Hampshire, formerly of Weston, died Thursday, July 6, 2023 at Carlyle Place in Bedford, New Hampshire. She was 88.

Born in Boston on August 3, 1934 she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Gertrude (Mahoney) Doherty. Mary was raised and educated in Somerville, attending Saint Clement High School. After high school she graduated from the R.N. Program at Lawrence Memorial Hospital and worked as a Registered Nurse at Mass General Hospital for over 20 years. She also spent more than 10 years as a nurse at Campion Center in Weston, taking care of the retired Jesuit Catholic priests.

As a devout Catholic she was part of the Catholic Graduates Club, where in the late 1960s she met her husband, Jeremiah F. Sullivan, Sr. and it was their shared love of dance, family and faith that made their courtship flourish. The two married and settled in Weston to start their life and family together.  They lived in Weston for more than 40 years before moving up to Bedford, New Hampshire where they could be closer to their son and grandchildren

During their time in Weston, Mary was an active parishioner at Saint Julia’s in Weston and taught CCD, served as a Eucharistic minister and volunteered around town to causes in the community such as Meals On Wheels, and the Council on Aging. In her free time, Mary had many interests, including candlepin bowling, cribbage, attending small local theater and concerts, watching baseball, and walking.

As a child, her family spent many happy summers in Marshfield at Green Harbor, and later she would bring her own family to Marshfield, for years and years of summer gatherings with her family. She also loved to travel.  She cruised to Alaska, and Hawaii and Mexico, and a special transatlantic trip aboard the QE2.

Mary was sweet, with a hilarious sense of humor and could keep you in line with her unmatched quick wit. These qualities are what made her such a skilled and caring nurse, beloved wife, loving mother, and cherished Nana. She will be remembered for the concern she always showed for others ahead of herself. Her warm gentle spirit will be missed by her family and all who knew and loved her.

In addition to her husband Jeremiah, Mary leaves her son Jeremiah Sullivan, Jr. and his wife Kerri, of Bedford New Hampshire; her three grandchildren, Alexander, Benjamin and Charlotte; her brothers Robert Doherty, and his wife Laurel, of Lewisburg, West Virginia, and James Doherty, and his wife Kathleen, of Sandwich. She also leaves many nieces, nephews and their families.

Family and friends will honor and remember Mary’s life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham, on Friday, July 14 from 9 to 10:30 a.m. before leaving in procession to Saint Julia's Church, 374 Boston Post Road in Weston, where her funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Linwood Cemetery Weston.

In lieu of flowers, donations made in her honor to support Alzheimer's Disease Research through the BrightFocus Foundation,  https://www.brightfocus.org  would be appreciated.
