Mary M. (Fontanezi) Charlton, of Waltham, died Saturday, May 10, 2025 at Newton-Wellesley Hospital. She was 83.
Mary was born in Boston on June 20, 1941, a daughter of the late Augustus and Margaret (Sullivan) Fontanezi, and was raised in South Boston and later moved to Watertown.
In September, 1973 she married Waltham native Robert A. “Red” Charlton and the couple made Waltham their lifelong home. They enjoyed thirty-nine happy years together before Red’s death in December, 2012.
She worked years ago at the Waltham Supermarket before becoming the longtime activities director at the former Piety Corner Nursing Home in Waltham.
Mary leaves her nephews and niece, Scott Towne, Robert Towne, Linda Spaulding and her children, Jackie and David; her dear friends, Harry “Skip” and Deborah Salvo and Monique Balabanis and a wonderful group of neighbors whom she cherished.
Family and friends will honor and remember Mary’s life by gathering for an Evening Wake in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Tuesday, May 13th from 4 to 7 p.m. and again at 9 a.m. on Wednesday morning before leaving in procession to Sacred Heart Church, 311 River Street, Waltham where her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Mount Feake Cemetery, Waltham.
