Marilyn B. (Gallo) Schutt

April 11, 1930 — October 28, 2026

Middleborough, MA

Middleboro, MA – “That’s something!” was a common phrase Marilyn Schutt used to describe many things, but it usually meant something was unique and special. Marilyn Schutt was truly “something!” Active into her early 80s, Marilyn enjoyed bicycling, skiing, boating and hiking, and was most content swimming in the ocean.

Complementing her active lifestyle were many social, artistic and community-based pursuits. Music was central in Marilyn’s life. She was a music education major at Syracuse University and a talented pianist throughout her life. She sang in the community chorus and performed with a senior tap dance troupe. A lifelong member of the East Lyme Garden Club, Marilyn brought nature into her home and loved being out in nature, as well. In the community, Marilyn was active in the Friends of the Oswegatchie Hills Nature Preserve organization and the East Lyme Historical Society. She was also the friendly face that greeted a generation of children and parents as the administrative assistant in the office of Flanders Elementary School.

Marilyn brought all these qualities (and a great sense of humor) to bear as a trusted friend, the amazing mom of four children and with her partner in crime, her husband Marvin, to whom she was married for 67 years before his death in 2019.

Marilyn died peacefully on October 28, 2026 at the Hannah BG Shaw Home in Middleboro, MA after a period of failing health. She was 96.

Marilyn leaves her children, David James Schutt (Sandra) of West Wareham, MA, Donna Lynn Schutt (Stack Kenny) of County Donegal, Ireland and Daniel Marvin Schutt (Christian Flynn) of Milton, MA; and her grandchildren, Anya Boyd (Andrew) and Derrick Schutt-Flynn. Her son, Dwight Everett Schutt died in 1974.

There are no calling hours. Burial is private.

Memorials in Marilyn’s name may be made to the Dwight Schutt Memorial Scholarship, East Lyme Scholarship Association, PO Box 190, Niantic, CT 06357 or the Friends of the Oswegatchie Hills Nature Preserve https://www.oswhills.org/make-a-gift.html.
