Marie (Kubovcik) Bauman

Born in Larksville, Pennsylvania, in her long life Marie lived in four other states: New Jersey, Michigan, Hawaii, and Massachusetts, and she put down strong roots wherever she lived. She was the middle of five daughters of Paul and Anna Kubovcik in a Slovak community, and she never forgot her Slovak heritage. In the early 1940s, the family moved to New Jersey, where Marie made several lifelong friends, graduated from West Side High School in Newark, and began administrative work in a local bank. In 1956, she married Bernard Bauman and together they made a home in Detroit and Warren, Michigan. She was actively involved in liturgy and education in her church, tutored children with special needs, and became part of the Bauman extended family.

She enjoyed travel within the United States, including Alaska—but especially Hawaii. After many trips to the Hawaiian Islands, she and Bernie followed their dream and built a house in Waikoloa on the Big Island in 1987. There she made many friends and enjoyed volunteering in several organizations, exploring the island, and hosting visiting family. Marie continued her life in Hawaii after Bernie died in 2000, and in 2015 she moved to Newton, Massachusetts, to be closer to family. At Cabot Park Village in Newton, she made new friends and enjoyed reconnecting with her East Coast family and exploring the Boston area. She was a voracious reader and a deep thinker on subjects ranging from spirituality to science. In her later years, she became passionate about coloring intricate designs that she gifted Cabot Park residents on their birthdays. She will be missed by her last surviving sister, Josephine Kubovcik, of Brighton, Massachusetts, and several generations of nieces and nephews, as well as by the many friends she made at Cabot Park.

A funeral Mass will be held on September 29 at 10 a.m. at St. Ignatius of Loyola Church, 28 Commonwealth Avenue, Chestnut Hill, MA 02467.
