Waltham – Mrs. Margaret M. (Monahan) Horrigan, formerly of Fort Pierce, Florida, died peacefully on Saturday, July 4, 2025 at the home of her daughter, Ann. She was 97.
Margaret M. Monahan was born February 13, 1928 in Waltham a daughter of the late James H. and Elizabeth (Kempton) Monahan. Raised and educated in Waltham she graduated from Waltham High School. She married Robert Horrigan on June 29, 1947 in Saint Charles Borromeo Church. Margaret stayed at home to raise her seven children and it wasn’t until they were young adults that she returned to school earning both her Bachelor and Master’s degrees from Cambridge College. She worked for various companies including ATEX Corporation in the human resources department.
A lifelong Waltham resident she made Florida her full-time home in 2000. She was a well known and loved neighbor at Tropical Isles Park in Fort Pierce. Active in its homeowner’s association she served as its president for many years and was instrumental in facilitating the purchase by the residents when they property was on the market a few years back. She was past-president of MARES (Massachusetts Association of Recreational Employees). She returned back to her native Waltham in October 2024 to be closer with family.
Margaret loved the read of a good book and the challenge of a crossword puzzle. Her hands stayed active with her talented crocheting and she loved when family and friends were at the table enjoying the foods she loved to prepare.
Wife of the late Robert Horrigan she was also predeceased by her daughter, Margaret 'Peggy' Francis and siblings, Esther Monahan, Elizabeth Monahan and Paul Monahan (late Bernice); her son-in-law, Peter Ricci and her longtime companion, Vincent Baia.
She leaves her children, Kathleen E. Dubie (Roland), Ann E. Ricci, Robert Horrigan (Kathleen), John ‘Jack’ Horrigan, all of Waltham, James H. Horrigan (Karen) of Sanbornville, NH, and Daniel L. Horrigan (Patricia) of Hopkinton; her son-in-law, Felton Francis of Wakefield, NH; grandmother of Lloyd Perna (Carol), Aaron Perna (Susan), Carrie Dubie, Jon Dubie (Rachel), Jeff Ricci (Noella), Alyssa Cronin (Patricia), Jill Maxwell (Christopher), Maria McPhee (Steven), Michael Horrigan (Caileen), Brian Horrigan, James Horrigan, Jr. (Brittany), Kelly Horrigan and Ashley Horrigan; also survived by 31 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren; nieces & nephews.
Family and friends will honor Margaret’s life by gathering for an Evening Wake at Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham, on Thursday, July 10th from 4 to 7 p.m. and again on Friday morning where her service will be held at 11 a.m. Burial is private in Calvary Cemetery.
