Margaret A. (McGovern) O'Connor

Margaret A. ‘Peg’ (McGovern) O’Connor, of Waltham, died Monday, July 8, 2024 in Newton-Wellesley Hospital. She was 80.

Peg was born in Waltham on April 20, 1944, the daughter of the late James F., Sr. and Margaret A. (Farquharson) McGovern, and was a graduate of Saint Mary’s High School in Waltham. After that she earned a certificate at the Shepard-Gill School of Practical Nursing of Massachusetts General Hospital.

For thirty-seven years Peg worked as an LPN at Waltham Hospital where her dedication to her duties was unmatched and where she made many lifelong friends. Her warm smile and kind and gentle nature put her patients immediately at ease.

After the hospital closed she spent another seventeen years working at Harvard Vanguard Endoscopy Center in Kenmore Square before retiring.

Peg loved spending time with her family and formed a special bond with her granddaughters. Summers spent at their cottage in Manomet created a lifetime of memories.

In addition to her husband, Michael F. ‘Mike’ O’Connor, she leaves her children, Michael J. O’Connor (Marlo), Maureen M. O’Connor and Maryellen O’Connor, all of Waltham; her grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Ryanne O'Connor; her siblings, Robert S. McGovern (Mary Ann) of Waltham and James F. McGovern, Jr. of Reading and several nieces & nephews.

She was also the sister of the late Michael J. McGovern.

Family and friends will honor and remember Peg’s life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Friday, July 12th from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. and again at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday morning before leaving in procession to Saint Mary’s Church, 133 School Street, Waltham where her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Burial will follow in Mount Feake Cemetery, Waltham.

Peg's family extends their deepest gratitude to the members of the Waltham Fire Department and other first responders who responded to her needs with great care and concern during her recent illness.  They are forever grateful
