Marcia B. (Burpee) Cook

June 9, 1932 — August 23, 2021

Marcia Burpee Cook passed away peacefully at the age of 89 while surrounded by her loving family, after a short battle with cancer on Monday, August 23, 2021. Marcia was born on June 9, 1932 in Quincy Massachusetts, the youngest of three daughters of Maurice and June Burpee.

Marcia grew up in Braintree and attended local schools including Braintree High School. After High School she attended Boston University where she met the love of her life, George Cook. Not long after graduating, they were married October 18th 1958 at the Braintree Neighborhood Club. They started a family shortly after and raised three boys, who she adored, in Cohasset, North Haven Connecticut, and Weston Massachusetts.

Always a fierce competitor and a sports enthusiast she enjoyed playing golf with her husband, and later with her many friends in women's leagues at Weston Golf Club. She was an accomplished golfer who won several club tournaments, an amazing bowler, figure skater, and loved skiing in Vermont with her family where they would usually spend the entire day on the slopes at their Okemo Vermont house. Forever the athlete, she often would reminisce with her grandchildren and family later in life, about her high school field hockey days, which she enjoyed so much. Some of her fondest memories were skiing with her family and playing a round of golf with her 3 boys.

Marcia loved being with family and friends and, along with George, hosted Thanksgiving Dinner every year for her entire family, which at times, was close to 40 people. She was an incredible cook and enjoyed experimenting with many dishes which everyone loved. She was also a very talented gardener and enjoyed being a member of various garden clubs, including as President of the Weston Garden club, where she spent many hours making arrangements and tending to her own beautiful gardens at her home.

Marcia was also an extremely kind and thoughtful person, having a big heart, especially when it came to animals. It always seemed stray animals would often appear at her home, almost as if they knew she would never turn any of them away. At one point in Connecticut, the family pets consisted of three dogs, seven cats, a Rabbit, and hamster, safe to say, the family shared her love for animals. Hands down, cats were her favorite, having many throughout her lifetime with names like Klapka, Woolworth, Tinker Bell, and Boomer.

Marcia was always a stylish dresser. Her favorite was sporting beautiful hand knit cardigans, her needlepoint shoes with a cat motif, or in her earlier years, donning a stylish fur hat on the ski slopes.

Always putting other people before herself, she was very strong minded, determined, tough woman that had a spectacular sense of humor. Her favorite expressions were NBD (no big deal) and "don't sweat the small stuff."

Nothing put a smile on her face, or lit up the room brighter, then when any of her 3 sons were with her. She loved nothing more than family gatherings at holidays with grandchildren and loved ones.

She was predeceased by her parents Maurice and June Burpee , her loving and wonderful husband George, sister Janice Jones, and brother in-laws Bradford Ashton and Robert Jones.

She is survived by her children, David and Ann Cook of Saco Maine, Douglas and Patricia Cook of Shrewsbury and Andrew Cook of Grafton, Massachusetts: her seven grandchildren Jonathan , Amanda, James , Brendan, Sarah, Allyson and Caroline; her sister, Joan Ashton of Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, Ellen Roy of Sudbury and many nieces and nephews that will forever remember Marcia in their hearts.

The family would like to extend a very warm and heartfelt thank you to Brookside Hospice and to the incredibly professional staff at Sunrise Living of Wayland for all they did to make Marcia feel comfortable.

Family and friends will honor and remember Marcia's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Tuesday, September 7th from 4 to 7 p.m. Funeral and burial services will be private.
