John B. Spignese

February 9, 1930 — August 7, 2023

Waltham

John B. Spignese, resident of Waltham, formerly of Marshfield, died peacefully at his home, surrounded by his family. He was 93.

John was born in Cambridge on February 9, 1930, a son of the late Anthony and Mary (Maniofi) Spignese. Raised in Somerville, he was a graduate of Carmelite Seminary in Hamilton, Massachusetts, and continued his studies at Boston State College. He enlisted in the United States Army and served honorably during the Korean Conflict.

John retired from the US Postal Service after working 36 years as a letter carrier.

He married his bride of fifty-five years, Mary Langone in 1968 and the pair began their married life in Somerville.  Mary and John then moved to Lynn before they settled in Marshfield where they lived for forty years and where they raised their beloved daughters, Marianne and Christina.

Whether it was watching the professionals or playing a round himself, John loved golfing in his free time. He found great peace, enjoyment, and kinship at Green Harbor Golf Club where he and his brother-in-law, Bob Langone, played many, many, MANY rounds.

He leaves his wife, Mary L. (Langone) Spignese of Waltham; his daughters, Marianne Duffy (Stephen) and Christina McCalla (Gregg), both of Waltham; his grandchildren, Jack and Gina Duffy and Lucas and John McCalla; his brother and sister, Susan Spignese of Danvers and Frank Spignese of Malden. John was also the brother of the late Rose Materese, Anthony Spignese, and Teresa Wilson. John leaves many nieces, nephews, and their families who will all miss him dearly.

Family and friends will honor and remember John’s life by gathering in Saint Jude Church, 147 Main Street, Waltham on Monday, August 14th where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Burial at Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne will be private.
