Joan L. (Nies) Waite

Waltham – Mrs. Joan L. (Nies) Waite, of Waltham, died Saturday, October 29, 2022 at her home. She was 88.

Joan was born in Waltham on December 11, 1933, a daughter of the late Edwin and Florence (Murphy) Nies and had lived for a time in New Hampshire and in Amesbury before returning to Waltham as a teen. Until her retirement she worked for years as a nurse's aide with the Waltham Visiting Nurses Association.

She enjoyed traveling to the mountain and lakes regions of New Hampshire, especially back to her childhood home in North Wakefield and to Little Sebago Lake and Ocean Park, both in Maine.

Joan attended many events at Waltham's Moose Lodge No. 1018 with her husband Paul and could frequently be found playing bingo at different venues in the area.

The wife of the late Paul S. Waite (†July 12, 1993), mother of the late Laura Waite (†September 17, 2017), and grandmother of the late Kenneth Rose (†January 13, 2020), she leaves her children, Steven Waite of Waltham, Brian Waite (Barbara), of Ayer, Mark Waite of Waltham and Paula Rose (late Kenneth †May 10, 2003), of Waltham; her grandchildren, Christy Waite, Brandon Rose and Brian Waite, Jr.; her brothers, Edward Nies of Framingham and Robert Nies of Connecticut and several nieces, nephews and their families. Joan was also lifelong best friends with Nancy Green and the late Ann Harding.

Joan was also the sister of the late Forrest Nies and Claire Yerardi.

Family and friends will honor and remember Joan's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Wednesday, November 2nd from 4 to 7 p.m. and again at 11 a.m. on Thursday morning when her funeral service will be held. Following cremation, burial in Calvary Cemetery will be private.
