Mrs. Jeanne E. McElligott of Worcester, formerly of Nashua, New Hampshire, Brockton, and Waltham, died at Notre Dame Long-Term Care Center on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, after a long struggle with Alzheimers. She was 94 years old.
Jeanne was born in Waltham on August 29, 1931, a daughter of the late Henry and Ellen (Riley) LeDuc. She was a proud graduate of Waltham High School Class of 1950 and active in their class activities even in her later retired years.
She was an early pioneer in the new field of computers in the early 1950s taking postgraduate classes at Northeastern University and then working in local companies wiring computer boards, doing some basic programming, and creating punch card data files.
In 1955, she married John Francis McElligott, Jr., a young man from Arlington she met at the Wallex Roller Skating Rink. They were married for 58 years filled with love for each other, and the couple moved to Brockton in 1970, where they raised their children. They later relocated to Nashua in 2002, where she lived until John’s passing in 2013.
Jeanne was a loving caregiver to her son, husband, and mother during their years of illness and health decline. She cared for her mother in her home for almost 20 years.
Jeanne had a deep Catholic faith with her devotions to the Virgin Mother Mary being particularly meaningful for her. She always attended weekly Mass and while living in the nursing home she enjoyed daily Mass. When her health would not allow participation in Mass, she would faithfully watch it on television. Her greatest joy came from spending time with her immediate and extended large family. She loved her grandchildren more than anything. She enjoyed traveling, whether it was camping or visiting historical places in the United States and Canada with her family. She was a very kind, loving, generous, funny, and gentle woman.
In addition to her parents and husband, John, Jeanne was preceded in death by her son, John A. McElligott, granddaughter Nicole Chicarello, and son-in-law John Stewart.
She is survived by her children, Susan J. Chicarello and her husband, Robert, of Ocala Florida, Cathleen E. McElligott (late John M. Stewart), of Worcester, and Thomas F. McElligott of Nashua; her grandchildren, Heather Coolbeth and her husband Jesse and John Francis Stewart, and is also survived by her many nieces and nephews whom she loved very much and her wide circle of close friends whose company she always enjoyed.
The family is very thankful for the genuinely loving care and expert services provided by Notre Dame Health at Notre Dame du Lac Assisted Living and Notre Dame Health Care and Rehabilitation Center. Their staff are truly special people and providers.
Family and friends will honor and remember Jeanne’s life of love and devotion by gathering for an Evening Wake in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham, on Thursday, September 11th, from 4 to 7 p.m. and again at 9 a.m. on Friday morning before leaving in procession to Saint Mary’s Church, 133 School Street, Waltham, where her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Saint Paul’s Cemetery, Arlington.
