Irene A. (Lopez) Cox

Irene A. (Lopez) Cox, of Waltham, died on Thursday, June 17, 2021, surrounded by her family at her home in Waltham. She was 91.
Irene was born on February 19, 1930, in Cambridge, a daughter of the late Stephen and Mary (Cushing) Lopez. She was a graduate of Arlington High School with the class of 1947. Irene married the love of her life, Warren J. 'Brud' Cox on May 3, 1952, in Saint Agnes Church in Arlington. They lived happily in Waltham where they raised their family. After 53 years of marriage, Warren died on June 10, 2005.
An accomplished pianist, Irene deeply loved and was devoted to her family. She especially enjoyed cooking big Sunday dinners and celebrating birthdays and holidays with her family. Irene also treasured vacations with her family in New Hampshire and on the Cape.
In addition to raising her four children Irene was the secretary to Mayor William F. Stanley for 13 years and also worked for the Reagle Players in Waltham for many years.
In addition to her husband, Warren, she is predeceased by her siblings, Charlie Lopez, Mae Vacon, and Violet O'Brien.
Irene leaves her beloved children, Dianne I. Cox, John W. 'Jack' Cox, Richard S. Cox (Julie) and Kathleen Cox Johnson (Steven), all of Waltham; her grandchildren, Jessica Swensen (Garth) of Northborough and Amanda Baudanza (late T.J.) of Westborough; great-grandson, Grant Warren Swensen; and many nieces & nephews.
Her family offers words of thanks to devoted friends Linda Caruso, Donna Higgins, and Odette Algarin for the loving care they provided Irene over the past three years.
Family and friends will honor and remember Irene's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Tuesday, June 22nd from 4 to 7 p.m. and again at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday morning before leaving in procession to Saint Jude Church, 147 Main Street, Waltham where her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow in Grove Hill Cemetery, Waltham.
Memorials in her name may be made to Saint Jude Parish, 147 Main Street, Waltham, MA 02453.
