Harold M. “Buddy” Strout

Harold M. “Buddy” Strout, 87, of Waltham, died Friday, September 4, 2026 at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center in Burlington.

Born July 9, 1939 in Cambridge, he was the son of the late Harold A. Strout and Loretta P. (Hynes) Strout. Buddy grew up in the Brighton neighborhood of Boston and graduated from Brighton High School with the Class of 1958. He went on to earn a certificate from Wentworth Institute.

A talented athlete from a young age, Buddy spent much of his youth on the baseball field at Roger Park or playing hockey on the nearest frozen pond. Even in his late 80s, he never let his family forget he was the captain of his high school teams and was scouted by the Yankees.

A longtime resident of Waltham, Buddy spent four decades as a skilled model maker and prototype specialist for Hewlett-Packard, in Waltham and Andover, focusing primarily on medical devices. He took great pride turning the engineers’ designs into physical reality with precise and patient craftsmanship. He retired in 2005.

Away from the shop, Buddy was happiest with a line in the water. He fished primarily on the Cape Cod Canal and was a member of the Stan Gibbs Fishing Club and the Canal Sportsman’s Club, both in Bourne. A lover of the outdoors, he enjoyed traveling the country in search of the best fishing spots, collecting memorable stories along the way. Never one to sit still for too long, even in retirement, Buddy served as a crossing guard at Northeast Elementary School in Waltham for more than five years.

He leaves his son, Wayne Strout of Hopkinton; his daughter, Jane Strout of Boston; his grandchildren, Amanda Strout of Boston, Justin Strout (veteran of the United States Army) of Denver, and Erik Strout of Seattle; his sisters, Dorothy Robinson of Plymouth and Theresa McNamara of Plymouth; and many loving nieces, nephews, and friends.

He was the brother of the late Patricia Murphy and the late Mary Margaret Armada.

Family and friends will honor and remember Buddy’s life by gathering in Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Church, 880 Trapelo Road, Waltham, on Saturday, September 19th, where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m.
