Greta L. (Gould) Welch

Mrs. Greta L. (Gould) Welch, of Dedham, formerly of West Roxbury and Waltham, died Thursday, July 7, 2022 in Traditions of Dedham. She was 94.

Greta was born on July 23, 1927 in Belmont a daughter of the late Appleton and Bernadette (Hawkes) Gould. The death of her mother at a very young age she was lovingly raised by Charles and Cecelia (Hawkes) Hayes. She was a graduate of Mount Trinity Academy and Bryant and Stratton School. She married Walter F. Welch on February 17, 1955 at Robinhood's Ten Acres, in Wayland. Residents of Waltham for many years they later moved to West Roxbury and later to Dedham in 1974. Life and their later years moved Walter and Greta to Traditions in Dedham where Greta really loved the environment, staff and other residents.

Prior to staying at home to raise her family, she worked for New England Telephone Company as an accounts manager. She later returned to the telephone company before becoming the office manager for her husband's optometrics practice for many years.

Greta kept her mind active with daily crosswords, Sudoku and many games of bingo. She adored her grandchildren and loved her time spent on Cape Cod.

In addition to her late husband, Walter (†September 26, 2019), she was predeceased by half-siblings Kenneth Gould, Charles, John, and Joseph Hayes and Rose Fitzsimmons.

She leaves her children, Michael G. Welch (Donna) of Burrillville, Rhode Island, Mary Lou Welch of Mashpee, David G. Welch (Annie Yen) of Waltham, Suzanne C. O'Neill (William) of Dedham, Lisa A. Welch of Walpole and Julie Welch of Austin Texas; her grandchildren Beth Anne and Andrew Emerzian, Liam O'Neill (Mariana), Christopher O'Neill (Cara), Kailene Sullivan (Michael) and Fiona O'Neill; great-grandmother of Kacey, Caleb and Aria Emerzian and Yana Rose O'Neill and Dorian Malcolm O'Neill; half-sister Nancy Fowler of Bangor, Maine; also survived by nieces & nephews.

Family and friends will honor and remember Greta's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte.), Waltham on Monday, July 11th from 10 to 12 a.m. followed by a graveside service in Saint Joseph Cemetery, 990 LaGrange Street, West Roxbury, at 1 p.m.
