Elizabeth 'Betty' (Campbell) Malloy

Elizabeth (Betty) Malloy, 96, of Decatur, GA, beloved wife, and mother went to her final resting place on Sunday, August 14, 2022 surrounded by her loving children at Emory Hospital Hospice Care. Born November 12, 1925, in Newton, MA, she was daughter to the late Joseph Aloysius Campbell and Eva Tyrrell Campbell and wife to the late Joseph (Joe) Whelan Malloy.

Betty's life centered on her six children, four grandchildren and two great-granddaughters. She is survived by four children Patricia, Jane, David and Joseph, Jr (Jay). She was predeceased by sons Stephen and Brian. She is also survived by her sister, Joan Cannon (nee Campbell), grandchildren Jonathan David Malloy (Sarita Cini), James Patrick Malloy, Ann Malloy Vance (James Vance), Mattie Malloy Marks (Nathan Marks), great granddaughters, Zoey Vance, Maeve Marks, daughters-in-law Janet Scheib Malloy (Brian) and Samille Mitchell Malloy (David). She also has many nieces and nephews that all loved her very much.

Betty was predeceased by sisters Marie Campbell Herendeen, Sr. Anne Campbell, CSJ and brothers Joseph Campbell, Paul Campbell, and brother-in-laws Charles Andrew Malloy, Edward V. Cannon, Karl Herendeen and sister-in-laws Marie Campbell and Agnes Robinson Campbell.

Betty grew up in Newton, Massachusetts and graduated from Newton High School. After graduating she went on to work as a draftsperson during World War II and was very proud of her contribution to the war effort.

She met, fell in love with and married husband Joe Malloy in 1946. She said one key to their happiness was that he always made her laugh. They first lived in Waltham, Massachusetts and became the proud parents of six healthy children. Betty would tell you this was her greatest accomplishment and often times when she met someone for the very first time she would happily and proudly tell that person, "I have six children".

Betty, Joe, and family moved to Richmond Virginia, and then onto Sandy Springs, Georgia, where they spent the majority of their time raising their children. Joe and Betty loved their neighborhood in Sandy Springs and especially the great friends they made there. Betty was a member of the Sandy Springs Garden Club, ALTA, and Spalding Woods Swim Club in her "spare time." The family were members of St. Jude Catholic Church where Betty and Joe instilled the love of God and religion in their children. They also loved to attend all or most of the football, baseball, and basketball games that Steve, Brian, David, and Jay participated in. Sadly, Joe died prematurely from heart disease in 1971 and Betty, at 46 years old, found herself looking for a job outside the home for the first time since she had worked as a draftsperson during World War II.

Betty became a Distributer for the Atlanta Journal and helped many young people start their business careers by delivering the Atlanta Journal afternoon paper. She then went to work for Cameron & Colby Insurance and was employed there for ten years. She moved on to a career in Real Estate, first working for Buckhead Brokers in Atlanta and then at Prudential Real Estate Investors in Destin, Florida.

Betty moved to Destin, Florida in 1995 where, after working for Prudential, she retired and thoroughly enjoyed the beach life with lots of friends. She loved her daily walks, playing bridge with her friends every week, and attending Resurrection Catholic Church every Sunday. Betty was also active in the Destin Women's Club. Betty's adult children and then grandchildren visited her often in Destin and some of our best holiday celebrations were enjoyed there.

Ten years ago, at the age of 87, Betty moved back to Atlanta (Decatur) where she had the opportunity to be closer to and spend more time with her children, grandchildren, and finally great grandchildren. She was an active member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and enjoyed attending services every Sunday. All in all, it was the perfect way for Betty to spend the last ten years of her life.

The family will receive friends at A.S. Turner & Sons, from 2:00 to 4:00pm Saturday, August 20, 2022, and services will follow at 4:00pm. Betty's celebration of life will also be held at A. S. Turner & Sons, 2773 North Decatur Rd., Decatur, GA 30033.

Family and friends will honor and remember Betty's life by gathering for a calling hour in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham, on Friday, August 26th at 10 a.m. followed by her funeral service at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Waltham.
