Charles T. Gargone, of Waltham, passed away surrounded by family at his daughter’s home on Friday, July 11, 2025. He was 81.
Charlie was born on November 1, 1943, in Boston, a son of the late Sebastian and Catherine (Boghosian) Gargone. He was a lifelong Waltham resident and a graduate of Waltham Vocational High School.
Affectionately known as “The Radio Man,” Charlie had a long and successful career running his business, C.G. Communications, providing radio equipment and installation services, along with operating the towers that allowed for radio communications for many local emergency services and transportation companies. The towers provided coverage from Boston to Springfield.
Charlie was a lifelong Boston sports fan, sharing a special affinity for the Red Sox with his wife, Beverly. In fact, their amazing love story started on their first date in 1962, a doubleheader at Fenway; they never missed another game. In 1964, they were married and started their family in Waltham. Charlie and Beverly also enjoyed bowling together, but even where their interests diverged, it still worked out perfectly as they would spend summer vacations down the Cape in Dennisport; Beverly loved the beach, and Charlie loved to golf.
Charlie was well known in Waltham for his involvement in coaching Little League in North Waltham, as well as Babe Ruth, and Beverly was always right there alongside him, taking down the stats and calling them into the local papers so the kids could see their names the next day when they opened the Tribune. He also organized a men’s league softball team that he played on for many years.
He was known for being genuine and honest. A straight talker with an unmistakable voice, he wasn’t shy about making his opinions known. He was also incredibly generous, always willing to give the shirt off his back to help anyone in need. During the holidays, there was often someone new at the table, invited because they needed a place to belong. He will be remembered for his kind heart, hard work, and genuine love of people.
He is predeceased by his wife Beverly A. (Biddy) Gargone and his siblings, Edward A. Gargone, Catherine M. Hansberry, Carol A. Gargone, and Linda A. Gargone.
Charlie leaves his children Charles T. Gargone, Jr. (Carolyn DiPaolo-Gargone) of Greenfield, Steven A. Gargone of Orange, Cheryl Gargone of Hudson, and Marnie J. Kelly (Timothy) of Marlborough; his grandchildren, Brian C. Gargone, John E. Gargone, Nicholas S. Gargone (Tea), Gina M. O’Neil (Dillon), Elizabeth K. Murphy (Nate), and Crystal M. Gargone; his great-grandchildren Sebastian, Jeremy, Evelyn, and Rosemary; his siblings, Joan M. Mermelstein, Carolyn A. Scarlett (John), both of Waltham, and many nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will honor and remember Charlie's life by gathering for an Evening Wake in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham, on Friday, July 18th, from 4 to 7 p.m. and again at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning before leaving in procession to Saint Mary's Church, 133 School Street, Waltham, where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Mount Feake Cemetery, Waltham.
