Waltham - Charles Arthur Dunne passed away at the age of 85 on Tuesday, November 4, 2025 in Newton-Wellesley Hospital after a short illness.
In addition to his beloved wife of 57 years Nancy, Charlie is survived by his children, Charles M. ‘Chuck’ Dunne (Kelli) of Charleston, South Carolina and Kathleen M. Hirsh (Thomas) of Marlborough; his grandchildren, Jason, Owen, Thomas IV, Tavin, and Zepherin; his sister, Dolores ‘Dee’ A. LeGeyt (Earl) of Yarmouth Port; and many nieces and nephews.
Charlie was born on August 24, 1940, in Malden and grew up in Medford. He was the son of the late Charles A. and Mary A. (Harkins) Dunne. He graduated from Malden Catholic High School and earned his bachelor’s degree from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy. As a pharmacist, Charlie owned and operated Bates Pharmacy in Waltham and ended his successful 30-year career at Shore Pharmacy in Medford.
Charlie adored his family and friends.
He married Nancy M. Manzo on April 6, 1968, and they made Waltham their home. Together, they took many trips throughout New England, visiting Cape Cod all year round, and traveled to Tuscany, Bermuda, Aruba, and Puerto Rico. Nancy and Charlie loved to celebrate and believed there was never a bad reason to have a party. With champagne in one hand, pretzels in the other, and Irish music in the background, Charlie and Nancy could turn any day into a celebration. And if champagne wasn’t available, A&W Root Beer sufficed.
Charlie served as a leadership example and hero to chuck.
He taught his daughter, Kathy, to ski, and they especially enjoyed hitting the slopes of Wildcat Mountain together. He also imparted his knowledge of getting a good deal to Kathy, who will take up this torch.
Lovingly called “Pop” by his grandchildren, Charlie loved hearing about and cheering on their interests, passions, and successes. He showered his grandchildren with his love and attention.
Charlie looked after his younger sister, Dee, who considers him the wind beneath her wings; he will always hold a special place in her heart.
Charlie liberally shared his laughter and stories with long-time friends from The Prospectors’ Ski Club in New Hampshire and the Sons of Erin, Cape Cod. As a neighbor, Charlie was renowned for his tomatoes and his kindness.
