Brendan J. Burke

Vero Beach, Florida - When you love what you do, it isn’t work. For Brendan Burke, that truth defined his life. He built a career that never required a jacket and tie, and his office was almost always within sight of the water. For more than forty years, Brendan thrived in the marine industry, and in his most recent years he specialized in yacht sales, custom boat builds, and complete or partial refits for Blue Water Marine Brokerage in Palm Beach, Florida. His work was not merely a profession but more an extension of his passion.

In 1972, Brendan’s love for boats and fishing brought him to Islamorada in the Florida Keys, where he worked alongside legendary sport‑fishing captains. By 1980, he was captaining boats himself, fishing from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia to Vitória, Brazil and all the hot spots in between. His skill, instinct, and deep respect for the ocean earned him a reputation that traveled far beyond the docks.

In 1990, Brendan became one of the pioneers of Costa Rican Bill Fishing, helping shape a fishery that would become world‑renowned. The following year, he set a remarkable world record: 1,414 billfish caught in 232 days, a feat that cemented his place among the sport’s elite. In 1993, Power and Motor Yacht Magazine named him one of the top 15 captains in the world, a distinction he carried with humility and pride. Over time, he also developed a passion for fly fishing, embracing the quiet artistry of the sport.

Brendan James Burke was born in Brooklyn, New York on March 20, 1952, a son of the late Patrick Brendan Burke of Lisdoonvarna, Ireland, and Mary Gertrude (Connors) Burke. Raised in Rockville Centre, New York, he graduated from Rockville Centre High School and briefly attended college in North Dakota before quickly returning to the ocean, the place where he truly belonged.

Friends and partners since 1992, Brendan later married his best friend, Karen C. Cooper, on January 18, 2004. Their partnership was one of deep loyalty, shared adventure, and enduring friendship.

Brendan’s life was shaped by salt air, open water, and the thrill of the chase. He lived with purpose, passion, and an unwavering devotion to the marine world he loved.

In addition to his beloved Karen, Brendan leaves his stepson, Benjamin Whitney of Boston; his siblings, Marypat Burke Donovan (Kevin Donovan) and Jane Burke of South Hempstead, New York, and William Burke and Ron Burke (Nancy Burke) of Rockville Centre, New York; and the family of his late sister, Lisa Burke of Baldwin Harbor, New York (Wayne Boerem). He is also survived by his nieces and nephews, including Christina Boerem, Patrick Donovan, Brendan Burke (Rachel Burke), Taylor Burke (Cyrus Tingley), Jordan Burke, and Jack Burke; his great-nieces and great-nephews, Ryan, Hannah, Jamie, Piper, and Quinn; and his brothers-in-law, Randy Cooper of Vero Beach, Florida, and Ben Cooper of Mount Dora, Florida.

President John F. Kennedy said "We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea, whether it is to sail or to watch it, we are going back from whence we came."

Brendan died peacefully on Thursday, September 4, 2026 in Massachusetts General Hospital after an illness. He was 74. 

Funeral services and cremation are private. A Life Celebration will be announced.
